Williamsport is a town
with a rich baseball history. Not only is it known for being the
birthplace of Little League Baseball and the host of the Little League
World Series, but it also has a minor league ballpark. Bowman Field has
hosted affiliated minor league baseball off and on since being built in
1926, and was the home of the infamous "Great
Potato Caper" in 1987.
Bowman Field very much has that "old
park" feel to it, as any park built in the 20's should. The place
reminded me so much of the older parks featured in movies like "A
League of Their Own," that I kept expecting Tom Hanks, Geena Davis,
and Madonna to come out of the dugout. Despite the age, however,
this is not a rickety place by any means. It has been well
maintained over the years, and parts of it have been renovated,
including aluminum floors and benches, an improvement over rotting wood,
but somewhat annoying when the crowd starts to stomp. The entrance
and concourse were renovated for the 2000 season, providing a much
more polished and attractive look to the
entrance and concessions area. They also added a small but nice
team store.
The night I was there, it was
"Dog Night." Fans who brought their dogs to the game got
in free. I sat near the canine section, and to my surprise,
despite the plethora of furry creatures, I only heard two or three barks
all night.
Overall, this is a pretty
nice place, one that seems perfectly suited for short-season ball.
If you've never been to an "historic" park before, Bowman
Field is a nice place to start.
Update:
Bowman Field now has the distinction of being the place where my niece
Alexandra saw her very first ball game! Check out the video ...
